Gustav 11:50pm 8/31: here comes the rain again August 31, 2008 at 11:57 pm

Gustav is making landfall. Sure, landfall of the storm’s eye isn’t predicted to happen until late morning tomorrow, but Tropical Storm force winds have just begun to overspread parts of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida.

A weather station in Cocodrie, LA reported a wind gust of 39mph in a rain band of Gustav at 8pm CDT, and a station on the Mississippi Delta is currently reporting 47mph winds and gusts into the mid-60mph range.

At New Orleans airport, the wind speed reported nearly an hour ago was 28mph with a gust of 35mph.

Radar shows the heavy rain and thunderstorms of the inner core coming ashore right now.

Gustav’s eye will probably pass as much as 60 miles away from New Orleans, but Gustav’s wind field is very large and the city will still likely end up being slammed by the most intense right-front quadrant of the storm tomorrow morning, including the storm surge of 10-14 feet.

I gotta go now. Stay safe, everyone, and remember to refer to official information from the NHC over my unofficial and untrained opinions. (But if you do want to see more of my untrained and unofficial opinions check the Gustav tag for all my posts on this storm. *grin*)
